Stay Safe on Halloween Night with These Driving Tips

Halloween brings extra excitement to Pauls Valley and communities across Oklahoma, but it also means more pedestrians, costumes, and distractions on the road. Seth Wadley Ford wants you and your family to enjoy the evening safely. Take a few minutes to plan your drive, slow down, and stay alert. These simple tips can help protect trick-or-treaters, passengers, and drivers.

Slow Down in Neighborhoods

Children may dart into the street unexpectedly, especially near homes and busy intersections. Reduce your speed well below the posted limit in residential areas and give yourself extra time to stop. Watch carefully between parked cars and near driveways. A slower pace gives everyone a better chance to react.

Keep Your Eyes on the Road

Halloween can bring distractions inside and outside your vehicle, from excited passengers to decorations and costumed pedestrians. Put your phone away before you start driving and avoid adjusting navigation or entertainment while the vehicle is moving. Ask a passenger to help if you need directions. Staying focused helps you spot hazards sooner.

Look for Trick-or-Treaters

Children in dark costumes can be difficult to see after sunset. Check sidewalks, crosswalks, and both sides of the street, and look carefully before turning or backing up. Be especially cautious near homes where families may be walking between houses. Never assume a quiet street is clear.

Use Your Headlights

Turn on your headlights before dusk so you can see the road and help others see your vehicle. Make sure your lights are clean and working properly before heading out. Use high beams only when appropriate, and switch to low beams when approaching other vehicles. Clear visibility is important for everyone sharing the road.

Make a Safe Plan for the Evening

If you’re taking children trick-or-treating, choose a route in advance and agree on safe pickup and drop-off locations. Designate a sober driver if your Halloween plans include alcohol. Allow extra travel time for slower traffic and frequent pedestrian crossings. A little preparation can make the evening more relaxed and safer.
